A Healthy Body!

Video is a great tool! I am reminded of a person I once knew who owned probably 80% of the current exercise videos of the day. They had aerobics routines, weightlifting, cardio, and stretching videos from every one of the most well known fitness instructors of their time. They would dress up in their fitness clothes and watch these videos sometimes for hours every day. Sometimes they would join in for the warm up routine before grabbing a snack and watching the rest of the workout. One day they informed me that they were tired of watching the same old routines and besides that, the videos didn’t really work anyway, They actually gained weight, before boxing up the videos and placing them in a closet.

Recently I received a message from someone who had left our church months ago. The text read; “I just realized that I actually left the church with less than when I came…Something I think we both should look at.” So I thought about it for few minutes before realizing that this person would often show up halfway through the worship, leave before the service was over and rarely came to any of the invitations for fellowship etcetera… Of course they never really grew! That would be like watching the exercise videos without ever exercising. Strange as it may seem this is more common than many of us want to admit.

I have spoken with many believers over the years who eventually leave their church and move on to another ministry feeling like they have “grown all they can here”. Christianity is designed to be a lifestyle not a spectator sport nor a source of entertainment. When there is no outflow of God from our life, there comes a time when Christian growth will come to an abrupt halt. The Lord designed the church body as a living organism through which the members grow and become whole through interaction with one another.

“…from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.” ~ Ephesians 4:16

“…so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another” ~Romans 12:5

Remember, the church is the body of Christ. Disconnected members will eventually wither away if not connected with the rest of the church body. Not only does the Christian need to interact in a healthy way with the church body, but the world right now needs the church body to be healthy and complete. We are the light of the world! It is good and healthy for the entire church when we function together on projects, or when we meet during the week for small groups or prayer meetings. It is also good for us to reach out to our community and share the goodness of our God with others. This is the very life flow of our faith! Jesus commanded us not only to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength but to love our neighbor in the same way. When asked in another place “who is our neighbor?”,  Jesus replied with the good Samaritan story. Point being that our neighbor is not only the people close to us or who believe like we do but those who may believe differently and need the hope of our gospel.

The fulfilled Christian is the one who, like Paul wrote Timothy. “Exercises their faith unto godliness”. So enjoy watching your sermons and learn from them. But don’t fall into the trap of thinking that watching and receiving good words alone is going to build you into a strong believer! Step out a little bit more than usual and get involved with others both within your church and in the world around you! Your faith will grow, your joy will grow, and your revelation of the word will open up into new and more meaningful levels of spirituality that will only be experienced through involvement!
